One cubic yard of gravel covers 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, 81 square feet at 4 inches deep, and 54 square feet at 6 inches deep. Coverage decreases as depth increases. Our coverage calculator lets you enter any depth to get the exact square footage your order will cover.
At 2 inches deep, you need 0.00617 cubic yards per square foot. At 3 inches deep, 0.00926 cubic yards per square foot. At 4 inches deep, 0.01235 cubic yards per square foot. Simpler: multiply your square footage by the depth in inches and divide by 324 to get cubic yards. Our gravel calculator performs this calculation automatically.
Use this formula: (Square Feet × Depth in inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards needed. Example: a 500 sq ft area at 4 inches deep = (500 × 4) ÷ 324 = 6.17 cubic yards. Add 10–15% waste to get your final order of 7.1–7.1 cubic yards. If you know your cubic yards and want to know coverage instead, our coverage calculator does the reverse calculation.
Standard bagged gravel is sold in 0.5 cubic foot bags. First calculate cubic yards needed using (Area × Depth inches) ÷ 324, then multiply cubic yards × 27 to get cubic feet, then divide by 0.5 for bag count. Example: 2 cubic yards = 54 cubic feet ÷ 0.5 = 108 bags. For large areas, bulk delivery is significantly cheaper.
A 10×10 ft (100 sq ft) area at 2 inches deep needs 0.62 cubic yards. At 3 inches deep, 0.93 cubic yards. At 4 inches deep, 1.23 cubic yards. At 6 inches deep, 1.85 cubic yards. Add 10% waste to each figure for your final order. Use our gravel calculator to get exact quantities for any size area.

Gravel Coverage Chart — Square Feet per Cubic Yard

The formula is simple: Coverage (sq ft) = Cubic Yards × 27 ÷ (Depth inches ÷ 12). The table below pre-calculates coverage for common quantities and depths. Use it as a quick reference, or enter your specific values above for exact results.

Coverage Tips for Common Projects

  • ▸ Driveways (4–6" deep): Order 15–20% extra — gravel compacts 10–15% under vehicle traffic over time, reducing effective coverage depth.
  • ▸ Garden paths (2–3" deep): Use landscape fabric underneath to prevent gravel from sinking into soil, which effectively reduces your coverage depth.
  • ▸ Playgrounds (6" deep): Coverage at playground depth is significantly less than paths. A 10×20 ft play area at 6" needs 3.7 cu yd — more than double the same area at 3".
  • ▸ Decorative areas (2" deep): Thin coverage is fine for low-traffic decorative areas. Avoid going under 1.5" — the ground will show through quickly.
