How many bags of mulch do I need?

First calculate your cubic yardage, then multiply by 13.5 for 2 cu ft bags, or by 9 for 3 cu ft bags. Example: if you need 3 cubic yards of mulch, that equals 3 × 13.5 = 40.5 bags of 2 cu ft — round up to 41 bags. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?

Formula: (Area in sq ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards. For a 500 sq ft garden at 3 inches deep: (500 × 3) ÷ 324 = 4.63 cubic yards. Add 10% waste to get 5.1 cubic yards — round up to 5.5 when ordering bulk. Most garden supply stores sell in half-yard increments. What is the best mulch depth for garden beds?

Apply 2 inches minimum for moisture retention, 3 inches for the best balance of weed control and moisture retention (recommended for most beds), and 4 inches for heavy weed suppression in established beds. Never apply more than 4 inches of organic mulch around trees and shrubs — too much mulch against stems causes rot and invites pests.
