Frequently Asked Questions
How to Calculate How Much Gravel You Need
Whether you're planning a new driveway, a garden path, or a French drain, knowing exactly how much gravel to order saves you money and prevents project delays. Our free gravel calculator does the math instantly — but understanding the formula helps you make better decisions on the job site.
The basic formula is: Volume (cubic yards) = Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27. All measurements must be in feet before dividing by 27 (the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard). For example, a driveway that is 50 ft long, 12 ft wide, and 4 inches (0.33 ft) deep needs 50 × 12 × 0.33 ÷ 27 = 7.3 cubic yards. Always add at least 10% for waste and compaction.
Recommended Gravel Depth by Application
| Application | Recommended Depth | Best Material |
|---|---|---|
| Driveway (light vehicles) | 4–6 inches | Crushed stone #57 |
| Driveway (heavy vehicles) | 6–8 inches | Crushed limestone |
| Garden path / walkway | 2–3 inches | Pea gravel |
| French drain | 12+ inches | Gravel #57 or river rock |
| Patio base | 4–6 inches | Crushed stone |
| Playground / sandbox | 6–9 inches | Pea gravel |
| Landscaping / mulch alternative | 2–3 inches | Decomposed granite |
Gravel Weight Per Cubic Yard
Gravel is sold by the cubic yard but delivered by weight (tons). Knowing the conversion helps you confirm your order with suppliers. Our gravel calculator in tons shows this automatically based on your chosen material. Standard bank-run gravel weighs approximately 1.4 tons per cubic yard, crushed stone is heavier at 1.5 tons/yd³, and pea gravel is slightly lighter at 1.35 tons/yd³.
Tips for Ordering Gravel
- ▸Always add 10–15% extra — gravel compacts under traffic and some is always lost during spreading.
- ▸Compact in layers — for driveways, compact every 3–4 inch layer with a plate compactor for maximum stability.
- ▸Use landscape fabric — lay fabric before gravel on garden paths to prevent weeds and slow material sinking into the soil.
- ▸Check truck capacity — a standard dump truck carries 10–14 cubic yards. If your order is larger, plan for multiple deliveries.
- ▸Minimum delivery orders — most suppliers require a minimum of 1–2 cubic yards. For small projects under 1 yd³, consider bagged gravel from a home improvement store.
