How to Calculate Flooring for Any Room
Calculating flooring correctly saves you from two expensive mistakes: running short mid-installation (which can mean dye lot mismatches) or over-buying and wasting money. Our free flooring calculator handles tile, hardwood, LVP, laminate, sheet vinyl, and carpet — and accounts for waste based on your installation pattern.
The basic formula is Total sq ft = Room Area × (1 + Waste %). For a 12×14 ft bedroom with 10% waste: 168 × 1.10 = 184.8 sq ft to order. For tile, divide total sq ft by tile size to get tile count. Our calculator does all this automatically — just enter your room dimensions and material type.

Flooring Type Comparison
Choosing the right material matters as much as calculating the right quantity. Porcelain tile is the most durable and water-resistant but requires professional installation in wet areas. LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) is the fastest-growing category — waterproof, DIY-friendly, and available from $2–$6/sq ft. Hardwood adds the most resale value but shouldn't be installed in bathrooms or basements without moisture protection. Laminate looks like hardwood at half the price but isn't waterproof. Carpet is the warmest and quietest option — ideal for bedrooms.
