How Our Calculators Work

Each calculator uses industry-standard formulas. For volume calculations (gravel, mulch, cubic yard), the core formula is: Volume (cu yd) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft) ÷ 27. For flooring, it is Total Area = Room Area × (1 + Waste %). For deck boards, it accounts for actual board width plus gap spacing to give exact board count.

All calculators support multiple shapes — you can enter length and width for a rectangle, diameter for a circle, or base and height for a triangle. L-shaped areas are handled with our L-shape option which subtracts a rectangular cutout from a larger rectangle. For rooms or areas where you already know the square footage, use the "Enter Area" option to skip shape selection and type in the area directly.

Every calculator includes a waste factor field — a percentage added on top of your calculated quantity to account for spillage, cuts, settling, and compaction. Standard waste factors are 10% for bulk materials and gravel, 10–15% for flooring, and 15% for deck boards. You can customize this for your specific project.
